About Codependent

Codependent is a conceptual cocktail and coffee bar inspired by Italian luxury, aperitivo culture, and the belief that beautiful design should be enjoyed by all. Think of it as a high end design showroom that meets Austin hospitality.

The idea

Aperitivo is the Italian habit of the hour before dinner: a drink, something small to eat, and no particular hurry. It is less about the cocktail than about the excuse to sit down with someone. We built Codependent around that idea and then stretched it across the whole day, because the same instinct that makes an aperitivo work at six in the evening makes a good espresso work at eight in the morning.

That is where the name comes from. Coffee and cocktails do not usually share a room. Here each one is better for the other being there.

The room

Terrazzo floors, sheer curtains running the full height of the glass, brass and gold against deep green marble, palms in the corners and a mirrorball that only makes sense after dark. Low leather seating for settling in, communal tables for working, and a patio of hanging chairs and desert planting for the days Austin allows it.

The space was designed by Urbanspace Interiors, and every piece in it was chosen the way we would choose it for a client. That is the point. Much of what you are sitting on can be bought rather than just admired.

Where we came from

Codependent opened in 2020. It is part of Urbanspace, the Austin real estate and interiors company founded by Kevin Burns, which has spent years shaping how this city looks from the inside out. Opening a bar was a natural extension of that: somewhere to put the ideas into a room anyone can walk into, order a negroni in, and judge for themselves.

Five years on, the room has settled into the neighbourhood that grew up around it.
